Tuition Freeze for Law Students

Some good news for current and prospective law and legal students has been received as a breath of fresh air as the respected law institution University of Massachusetts School of Law-Dartmouth declared that it is placing a free upon tuition and fees until 2015. As the media and various political entities have turned their attention towards issues with student loans in recent years some law schools have been responding by slowing the increase of their tuition fees or freezing them.

In 2010 the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, the Ave Maria School of Law, and the New Hampshire School of Law all froze their tuition at their current rates to offer their students a temporary reprieve from financial stress as well as attract prospective new applicants as well. While the list of law schools and legal technical education institutions is not incredibly long, many law universities have been offering more merit-based scholarships to help put a positive spin on ever increasing law school tuition fees. Similarly, some schools are attempting to stem the tide of their increasing tuition costs to students such as Northwestern University School of Law which will only be increasing their tuition by a relatively low three percent which is their lowest increase in the past forty years.

The University of Massachusetts School of Law-Dartmouth will freeze its current tuition for full-time in-state students at about $23,000 a year and at about $31,000 for out of state students up until 2015. Chancellor Jean MacCormack explained that, “as the commonwealth's first public law school, we have a mission to provide individuals with the aspiration, talent and will to succeed as citizen lawyers the opportunity to achieve their dream.” The Chancellor also stated that they feel there is no need for the prestigious university to increase their fee in the immediate future because their budget has room for the tuition freeze.
