Sketchers Shaping Up For Court

An Illinois woman is suing famous shoe manufacturer Skechers U.S.A. Inc. for an ankle injury. While in Washington sightseeing, the woman sprained her ankle While she was wearing Skechers Shape-up sneakers. Shape-up sneakers have a rounded sole that rocks as you walk. This unique design is alleged to tone and firm leg and buttock muscles while you are walking.

The suit filed in the District of Columbia is just one of an increasing amount of similar lawsuits that have been filed across the United States since February. Schachter, Hendy and Johnson, a law firm that is based in Ft. Wright Kentucky is representing plaintiffs in numerous suits in Ohio and Kentucky. Firm partner, Ron Johnson said that the firm will be filing suits in several other states in the near future.

The plaintiff in the Washington case claims that she was “lulled into purchasing a dangerous product that the Defendant knew produced a substantial risk of causing chronic injuries and inducing falls because of Skechers’ elevated and unstable, rocker-bottom sole.” The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount of damages that were incurred from a torn tendon that required surgery.

In addition to individual suits, a class action lawsuit is pending in the Southern District of California that alleges that the company is fraudulently marketing Shape-ups as having healthy benefits. A company spokesman said that they were "confident Shape-ups are safe." He said that millions of people are wearing the shoes and have not experienced any problems. The spokesman could not comment on any pending litigation's, but said they had not had the opportunity to review the claim or the plaintiffs medical records.
